Welcome to the website of guitarist, educator and author Lin Flanagan. He has enjoyed performing and teaching the guitar (jazz, classical, rock, blues, folk etc.) across a wide range of levels for over 35 years. He has also written on a broad range of musical topics for publications on both sides of the Atlantic.

He is the author of Moonlight in Vermont: The Official Biography of Johnny Smith, which is available from Centerstream Publishing and distributed by Hal Leonard.

Lin Flanagan has been a guitar teacher for over 30 years. He has lectured at the London College of Music and is a former guitar examiner for the Registry of Guitar Tutors. While maintaining a career as a performer, as a passionate educator he chose to concentrate his studies on developing a guitar and music theory teaching style that was founded upon a considerable wealth of knowledge.


He holds 3 Licentiate guitar teaching Diplomas in Classical, Plectrum and Electric Guitar at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the London College of Music, and a Diploma in Guitar Performance at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, as well as a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours, a Master of Arts Degree in Music, a Postgraduate Diploma and a Postgraduate Certificate in Music, and an Undergraduate Diploma in Music at the Open University. He also holds a Fellowship Thesis Diploma at the London College of Music, and a Fellowship Diploma with Honours in Plectrum Guitar Performance at the Victoria College of Music, for which he performed his own chord-melody jazz guitar arrangements.


From 2000 until 2022, he was a ‘Zen Master at the School of Dad Rock’ running the Strugglers, Improvers, Acoustic Folk Guitar, Fingerstyle Guitar, Chord Harmony and Introduction to Jazz Guitar residential courses at Guitar Weekends.


After 30 years of guitar teaching and performing around London and the South East, Lin Flanagan is now located in Porth-y-Waen on the Shropshire-Wales Border.

While developing a refined technique as a guitar teacher, Lin Flanagan has enjoyed a performing career over three decades. He has performed in a wide variety of both live and recorded settings throughout the UK and Germany, ranging from solo classical guitar work through to performances with a forty-five-piece orchestra, as well as small group jazz, folk, rock, blues and country. He is a former principal guitarist in the Mantovani Orchestra (UK).

Lin Flanagan has written on a wide range of musical subjects. He was a regular columnist for Acoustic Magazine in the UK from 2009 until 2012 and has also written articles for American Profile, Just Jazz Guitar and Vintage Guitar magazines in the USA, and the music journals of the Registry of Guitar Tutors and the Banjo-Mandolin-Guitar Federation in the UK.
